Swedish Golf Clubs - Open to all

Swedish golf clubs are open to all.

During the years there has been no private clubs with the exception of Svartinge GC, which opened in 2001 and is located north of Stockholm.

New clubs have been formed over the years by groups of people wishing to play golf in their neighbourhood. In a few cases the club has received aid by the community in forms of land or low costs on the lease. In contrast to many other golfing countries Sweden has at present no municipal course. But through the system of open clubs golf has still managed to grow at a good speed.

In recent years a couple of things have changed. A number of pay-and-play courses have opened offering opportunities for new golfers to play. Some of these courses have no intention of becoming anything other than a starting course while others gradually improve its courses and meet the requirements the Federation has set for a membership course.

The other noticeable change of recent years is that some courses, mainly in the big city areas, transform the traditional system of having a joining fee to a system of shares or playing rights, which could be sold at market prices.
